  • Singapore is a rapidly growing city-state of nearly 6 million people. It is one of the smallest countries in the world.
  • There are four official languages in Singapore: English, Mandarin, Malay and Tamil, reflecting the different ethnic make-up of the city.
  • Most people speak English, often very well. The schools educate children primarily in English, with a small portion of the day in “Mother Tongue” (e.g. if you are Chinese, you learn in Mandarin).
  • Many Singaporeans have a habit of adding “la” to the end of their sentences. For example, “okay-la,” is one example of Singlish.
  • In spite of its small size, the city has six digit zip codes!
  • Singapore is often referred to as a “fine city” because of the number of big-dollar fines that one can receive for infractions. For example, you can be fined for not flushing a public toilet or for chewing gum!
  • The lowest minimum recorded temperature ever is Singapore was 68F and that was 80 years ago!
  • Everyone we spoke to, from taxi drivers to friends, lamented that the cost of living is very high, which we also experienced.
  • To own a car, you must purchase a Certificate of Entitlement (COE) which gives you the right to drive a car onthe streets. The COE charge varies depending on the size of the vehicle and the demand at the time. When we were there, the COE for a small car was more than USGD50,000 (and it had been as high as USGD75,000 recently). This is in addition to the cost of the car, which is also at a premium.

  • Singaporeans can vote in the British Elections Heck, we can even stand for elections in the British House of Commons and campaign to be an MP of a British constituency. Because Singapore is a Commonwealth member, Singapore citizens have rights to vote in all elections in the UK. Now that’s one more option if you gave up on local politics.
  • Singapore is made up of 63 islands We wouldn’t recommend simply turning up on most of those islands though, as they are largely unoccupied and used for military or industrial purposes. But fret not, here is a list of islands you can check out for those adventurous weekends away from the laptop and potato chips.
  • The national anthem is found on the back of the SGD1,000 note If you turn the note around and look carefully, you can see it printed in micro-text. They probably figured you’d be singing Majulah Singapura if you ever got your hands on one of these babies anyway.
  • Singapore is one of only three surviving city-states in the world. The other two city-states that don’t have a capital are Monaco and the Vatican City. We’re small, but fierce.
  • There's a 'Hug Me' Coca-Cola machine in Singapore Located at the National University of Singapore, the first 'Hug Me' Coca-Cola machine dispenses a bottle of Coke when a person wraps his or her arms around the machine! That's just so cute! Money definitely can't buy love but it can sure get you some Coke to quench your thirst!
  • According to a research by the British Council, Singaporeans have the fastest walking speed.
